Tiji Festival Trek 2023 Upper Mustang

Tiji Festival held at Lomanthang, Upper Mustang is a unique cultural event that started centuries ago while the area of Lo was an independent Kingdom of the ethnic Lo people. The Tiji festival is celebrated to mark the victory of the Gods over the Demons and takes place on the third month of the Tibetan lunar calendar (usually in May or June). The upcoming Tiji Festival for 2023 has fallen on May 16-18.

The Tiji Festival activities represent the chasing away of those Demons and bad spirits from the kingdom and its walled capital Lomanthang thus bringing good fortune and harmony amongst the locals and beyond. During the event, a large number of local Lo people, trekkers, and visitors from different parts of the world gather in the courtyard of the Mustang King’s palace. It is a prime opportunity to witness the traditional costume and culture of the local people with a major attraction being the dancing and chanting of local Tibetan Buddhist Monks.

Our itinerary for Tiji Festival 2023 is combined with an exhilarating trek to Upper Mustang and Lomanthang (the center where the event takes place). This trip will be led by a local, knowledgeable, guide who has led the same trip in the past years. The Tiji festival itinerary can be changed from trek to mostly 4W drive jeep trip as now major villages including Lomanthing are connected by road to the outside world. You may check a youtube video of previous Tiji Festival here by Ghumante, Nepal.  Please contact us if you would like to join us for this extraordinary cultural experience.
