Trekking to Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Valley and Cho La Pass
Trekking to the Mt. Everest Base Camp is one of the most popular treks in the Himalaya. The trek begins with a flight to Lukla (elevation 2800m). From Lukla, the trekking proceeds to Khumbu Valley via Namche Bazaar, an important market town which has internet and a German Bakery. The next stop is Tengboche where we will find the largest Buddhist Monastery in the region. Mountain climbers often stop to receive the blessing of the Lama (Monk) before proceeding to Everest and other expeditions. We reach Everest base camp (5364m./17593 ft.) and Kalapattar (5550m/18204ft.), both of which are ultimate destinations for treks in the Everest region. We pass the villages of Pangoche, Dingboche and Loboche, the homes of well-known Sherpa mountaineers. Several side hikes can be made from these villages to appreciate stunning views.
The itinerary then has us trek from Khumbu Valley over the Cho-La Pass (5368m./17607ft.) to the Gokyo Valley, another marvelous trekking destination. We will stay in the little seasonal village of Gokyo and can hike to several places from there; the glacier, the ice lakes, the Cho Oyu base camp, and Gokyo Peak (5360m./17580ft.). The breathtaking 360 degree view from Gokyo Peak includes Mt. Everest (8850m/29035ft), Cho Oyu (8201m/26899ft), Lhotse (8516m/27932ft), Makalu (8463m/27758ft) and many others, making this little trekking peak one of the most visited spots in the Everest region. We return following the lower section of the valley to Khumjung, the largest Sherpa settlement of the area before passing back through Namche Bazaar on our way to Lukla for our return flight to Kathmandu.
