ThorongLa pass of Annapurna circuit trek is one of the most trekked high passes in the Himalaya. This trek starts from the small village of Dharapani which is reached after driving 10 hours from Kathmandu. The trek follows the Marshyangdi River Valley which drains the terraced paddy fields of the mid hills region of the country. Slowly, the trek reaches the alpine zone of Manang Valley, known in ancient Tibetan religious books as Nyshang. The valley is squeezed between the majestic peaks of Annapurna I (8091 meters) Manaslu (8516 meters), Pisang (6091m), Himluang (7120m) and many others. The most challenging day of the trek is the climb to the Thorong La Pass (5420m) which connects Manang Valley with Kaligandaki on the other side. Just below the Pass we see Muktinath, a site held sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists alike. You may see pilgrims who have arrived from Pokhara to visit this holy spot, a cultural highlight of the trip. Previously, we would continue on to Pokhara, but now there is a road connecting Jomsom to Pokhara and regular flights from Jomsom. We will take a plane to Pokhara from Jomsom. Soon there will be a road connecting the Manang Valley to Pokhara, so it is crucial for visitors to come soon before there is much change.
